National Park Service
Washington, DC

YOU GET THE back-up band tonight

Regional Director Terry Carlstrom is working on a security--freedom issue

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUATION

WE ARE GLAD THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN THIS STEP TO

PROVIDE LEADERSHIP IN THE POTOMAC WATERSHED. IT

IS YOUR RIVER, YOUR WATERSHED AND YOUR FUTURE.

THIS IS THE BEST WORK THAT THERE IS, THERE IS

PLENTY TO DO, AND WE NEED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF

YOU.

I. Personal view of leadership

help people help themselves protect and prosper

respect people, private property and state & local home rule--remember, the only people empowered by the public to make decisions about the future of the potomac river watershed are local elected officials.

place-based

community-based

A partnership typically refers to any voluntary
collaboration among individuals or organizations
working toward a common objective.

sustainable = environment, culture & economy

consensus-based

everyone is a participant and a designer

honor the special knowledge that everyone brings!

based on ecology---human ecology and the other kind

working with NPS on the Potomac in the future

Leadership -

1. how people trained in a program like this can work with the National Park Service on the Potomac?

you can work for us, with us, and hopefully not, against us.

opportunities

- pARKS, REGIONAL OFFICES AND HEADQUARTERS

friends groups and park partners

volunteers--national public lands day this friday and saturday

larger partnerships--chesapeake bay program committees and subcommittees, friends of the potomac, anacostia

- CONTRACTS, COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS

2. some of the qualities of leaders in the conservation arena

COMMUNICATION SKILLS, PARTNERING NATURE, LOVE OF PEOPLE AND NATURE, ABILITY TO GET TO YES, opportunities, PATIENCE---LONG-DISTANCE RUNNERS

3. how they can make their leadership "count" and accomplish important objectives

YOGI BERRA? SHOWING-UP IS 90% OF THE JOB.

RESPECT PERSPECTIVES OTHER THAN YOUR OWN.

BE FOR SOMETHING--SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS REQUIRE A POSITIVE CAUSE

WANT TO DO SOMETHING? MAKE FRIENDS!

WANT TO MAKE FRIENDS? BE CLEAR IN TERMS OF WHAT THE CAUSE IS AND WHO IS BEHIND THE CAUSE!

4. where they go from here in leadership on the Potomac. What are the niches available?

GET INVOLVED IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS. SUPPORT GOOD MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS OR WANT TO BE.

HELP BUILD PLATFORMS FOR HONEST OPEN, NON-JUDGEMENTAL DIALOGUE ABOUT ISSUES, OPPORTUNITIES AND THE FUTURE OF THIS WATERSHED.

BRING PEOPLE WHO AREN'T TALKING TOGETHER AND HELP THEM SHARE THEIR POINTS OF VIEW. REAL VS IMAGINED CONFLICT IS AN ISSUE WE NEED TO ADDRESS.

The Journey

--reflect on the unique journey that
they have taken from the Fairfax Stone to the mouth of the Potomac

--EXPERIENCE OF PLACE

--a topically related journey and/or

--AN educational journey.

ANN WHITE, GLENN KINSER, AND OTHERS HAVE employed adult learning techniques and
practiced skills, so they have hopefully mastered skills
that they will be able to use in a variety of settings.

ON BEHALF OF TERRY CARLSTROM, WE think that the graduates of the program now and in the future can be a very valuable asset for conservation, recreation and historical efforts on the Potomac.

PLEASE KNOW THAT AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF NPS, WE ARE willing to work with YOU AND ASSIST YOUR EFFORTS to accomplish mutual goals.

CONGRATULATIONS AND MAY YOU HAVE SUCCESS IN YOUR WORK!.
