African American Heritage River Link
Goal
To recognize and create a communication network among those historical sites, places, and events located within the Potomac River Basin, which are directly related to the African American experience.
Potomac American Heritage River Initiative
The Potomac American Heritage River Initiative, which acts in accordance with the goal of the Presidential designation of American Heritage Rivers, is to support communities within existing laws and regulations, by providing them with better access to information, tools and resources, and encouraging private funding of local efforts deserving special recognition.
African American Heritage River Link Mission
The African American Heritage River Link seeks to co-exist within the Potomac American Heritage River Initiative by creating a partnership with existing community organizations within the Potomac River Basin.
As a cooperator with the Potomac American Heritage River, this initiative shall, therefore, be partnered by the National Park Service as the lead federal agency, a River Navigator as the contact/liaison for all federal resources, the Friends of the Potomac as member organizations, and federal agencies as the Federal Agencies Team.
Objectives
- Create and distribute a publication that recognizes, in brief detail, significant African American historic sites and communities, festivals and events, and recreational heritage
- Create a partnership with the Friends of the Potomac
- Research existing projects that are linked to this initiative
- Claim a local organization as the official sponsor of this effort
- Serve as a regional tourism incentive
