Partnership Seminar

The Southeast (SER), National Capital (NCR) and Northeast (NER) Regional Offices, and the National Partnership Office, are sponsoring a joint East Coast In-Park Partnership Seminar on May 22, 23 and 24, 2002. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, the Greater Washington National Parks Fund, and the Potomac Riverboat Company.

Seminar Goals:

To share information on the art of partnering and fundraising within the National Park Service. To share perspectives from the parks, park-partners, Regional Offices, Headquarters and the Hill on best practices and innovations.
To focus the NPS on it’s new and strengthened emphasis on partnerships.
To build a cadre of partnership advocates and practitioners within NPS that can “carry the ball” towards increasing collaborative work with others and enhancing the effectiveness of these efforts in fulfilling the NPS mission.
To survey the various types of partnerships and how they are benefiting the parks.
To discuss the evolving National Park Foundation role.

Context:

The NPS has a long and successful history of reaching out to others to help us fulfill our mission. Working with partners expands our capabilities and challenges us to work better. Our most effective work results from this engagement with others, where the collective effort extends our reach and that of our collaborator.

Donations come to the NPS from individuals, organizations, foundations, corporations, businesses, and other entities as expressions of support, in response to the donor's awareness of our needs, or as a result of an organized fundraising campaign. The NPS recognizes and appreciates the efforts of non-profit support organizations such as friends groups, cooperating associations, the National Park Foundation, and park specific foundations that are willing and able to fundraise for national park units and programs.

Cooperating associations have a long history of enhancing and supporting the educational and interpretive role of the national parks in meaningful ways, including raising funds. Friends groups
and park-specific foundations play an increasingly vital role in supporting the NPS mission. In addition to providing volunteer and community support for individual parks these organizations often undertake fundraising projects and substantial capital campaigns to benefit the park area they support.

In looking to the future, the Service has great potential to serve the public more effectively–as a steward, educator, environmental leader, and advocate for a nationwide parks, open space, and outdoor recreation network. Energized by this vision, the NPS believes that the power of the park idea is its larger purpose--to create a citizenry committed to conserving its heritage and its home on earth.

The new leadership of NPS is a very strong proponent of partnerships and will encourage a high level of outreach and collaborative work to promote our mission. To achieve that level, we need to continue to hone our skills, learn from our success and evaluate our missteps. In this pursuit, the Southeast (SER), National Capital (NCR) and Northeast (NER) Regional Offices, and the National Partnership Office, are hosting the East Coast In-Parks Partnership Seminar.
